Dr. Kristen Pellegrino

Dr. Kristen Pellegrino’s degrees are from the Eastman School of Music (B.M. in applied violin and music education), and the University of Michigan (M.M. in violin performance/chamber music performance and Ph.D. in music education). Her violin teachers included Camilla Wicks, Paul Kantor, Gregory Fulkerson, William Preucil, Lynn Blakeslee, and Eric Rosenblith. As a member of the Chagall String Quartet, she spent two years in Chamber Music America’s Rural Residencies program. The Chagall String Quartet members lived in Johnstown, PA but they performed in three chamber music series (Johnstown, Indiana, and Somerset) and worked with students in their public schools and coached Youth Orchestra sectionals. The Chagalls also toured and participated in five chamber music festivals: 

  • The Banff Centre Programs-Chamber Music: Banff, Canada                      

  • Mendelssohn String Quartet Festival: Dover, Delaware                               

  • Amadeus String Quartet Festival: London, England                                     

  • Snowbird Chamber Music Festival: Snowbird, Utah (Muir String Quartet) 

    • Madeline Island Music Camp: Madeline Island, Wisconsin

Her coaches included members of the Tokyo, Julliard, Cleveland, Muir, Amadeus, Mendelssohn, Fine Arts, Audubon, Cavani, and Miami String Quartets as well as Apple Hill Chamber Player and Guest Coaches, Jean Barr, Lorand Fenyves, Norman Fischer, Andrew Jennings, Paul Kantor, Anton Nel, and Barry Snieder.

Dr. Pellegrino is now an Associate Professor of Music Education at the University of Texas at San Antonio and is President-Elect of American String Teachers Association (ASTA). Dr. Pellegrino has 27 scholarly publications (published or in press) and was awarded ASTA’s String Researcher Award, AERA’s Outstanding Early Career Paper Award in Music Education, and two UTSA grants. Kristen is co-editor of the Oxford Handbook of Preservice Music Teacher Education in the United States, in which she also wrote/co-wrote three chapters.

 

Kristen’s background in music education includes eight years of public-school string teaching at the elementary and high school levels (Fairfax County Public Schools and Warwick Public Schools), and 11 years of collegiate teaching experience, including at Rhode Island College, Central Michigan University, and Christopher Newport University.

 

She continues to perform as a member of Music on the Hill, where she has performed with the Miami String Quartet, Miller-Porfiris Duo, Chrysalis Piano Trio, and many amazing musicians, such as Daniel Gilbert, John Pellegrino, Donna Lee, Anne Marie Gabriele, Nicholas Goluses, Deborah Tien Price, Evan Price, Diana McVey, etc. (See: www.musiconthehillri.com )
